Spencer - (Lavender Orpington Cockerel) ADOPTED
**We are waiving his adoption fee in order to find him a home faster. **
Available for adoption:
You are adopting the chicken specifically in the picture who also has a name.
Name: Spencer
Date of Birth: January 20th, 2024
Breed: Lavender Orpington - Purebred
Gender: Male
Spencer is gorgeous and already showing a lot of promise in leading ladies and taking care of them. We've seen him showing the girls some worms and other goodies to eat. So cute! We have seen him diligently being a caretaker and not an a.hole. He is independent but you can hold him if you need to. He loves to watch what we're doing in the chicken yard.
Why do we offer young cockerels/roosters?
We have extensive biosecurity for our property. We hatch our own eggs or get our day old chicks from NPIP certified places. Since we do not keep males (Roosters/Cockerels) on site for breeding. If we do get male chicks for any reason, we will raise them until 5 months old and then they will be available for adoption to another flock for breeding and/or protection. Our boys are also hand raised and are friendly unless otherwise indicated.
Why do we offer grow outs ready to lay?
Some people want to skip the chick stage and get right to business with getting eggs. Others want to expand their flock or are looking for specific breeds. We always get extras of each breed we raise for others to enjoy once they reach maturity and are ready to lay eggs. We do the hard work and get them started well in life.
How we raise them:
Our chickens are ethically raised Organic with a lot of love and care. They are handled and hand raised from hatching. They are happy healthy chickens living a free ranged life chasing bugs, digging in the compost pile and sun bathing their fluffy butts. They are acclimated to being in all weather without additional heat. They have access to their coop which is always dry.
Health & Vaccinations:
All our chickens are vaccinated against Merricks Disease.
Each of our chickens comes with a Health Certificate.
We do not use antibiotics or other medications unless absolutely necessary.
We have strict biosecurity and focus on prevention and excellent husbandry to prevent issues or illnesses.
We offer our chickens an organic feed appropriate for their needs, supplements like calcium and grit for digestion. They get organic scratch daily and treats like cabbage and apples. They have unlimited access to their own worm farm compost and all the bugs and organics they gather while free ranging and foraging.
About this breed:
Lavender Orpingtons have a light purple tinge to their feathering. They’re not bright purple, which would just look silly, but they have light-colored feathers with an all-over pearl-like silvery-lilac tint. For the blondes out there: she looks like she’s just used a purple toner shampoo. You’ll know eggs-actly the shade I mean.
Lavender Orpingtons are large and sturdy-looking chickens that sit close to the ground. They have an arched, broad back and quite a stubby tail. Orpingtons look broader than they are thanks to their dense plumage of loose-knit feathers.
Lavender Orpingtons have dark grey, or slate-colored legs which are usually clean. Some strains might have a few stray feathers on their legs – we’ve all been there – but it’s not acceptable if you’re wanting to show them.
They have a single, five-pointed bright red comb, red wattles, and red earlobes which all pop against their light lavender feathers. They have beautiful bay-red eyes and their beaks are dark horn colored.
Lavender Orpington hens weigh around 8 lbs as adults and 7 lbs as pullets, while roosters are 10 lbs as adults and 8.5 lbs as cockerels. Lavender Orpingtons look heavier than they are thanks to their plumped-up purple plumage, but they’re still quite large ladies and gents.
